Electrical problem
1985 Porsche 911 Carrera 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 400k + miles

Found your comment that solenoid is most likely to blame when starter will not work when engine is hot. I see that insulating it is a solution. My QUESTION: Is solenoid going bad and insulation is temporary fix? Or is insulation a relatively permanant solution? I'm trying to decide whether I can insulate it and forget it! Or go for a new solenoid immediately.

Replace the starter solenoid then insulate it the best way you can think of-
