Engine Performance problem
1989 Pontiac Lemans 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

A few weeks ago my car began to have problems - every time I put my foot down the revs dropped right down and I lost all power, (like it was out of gas). It did not have this problem when it was in neutral. It then stopped going altogether, (when I put my foot down the revs dropped completely and the engine cut out, again feeling like it was out of gas). When I went back to pick it up it would not start (after I put petrol in it just case). I have changed the spark plugs as it seemed like a good starting point however this did not help. Does anybody have any ideas as to what the problem may be? Something to do with the fuel pump maybe? Any help would be really appreciated.
