2003 Pontiac Grand Prix ingintion switch

When l go to turn my car off it will shut down but the key will not return all the way for me to take it out l have to use a screw driver and in the steering column underneath l put the screwdriver in the hole and push up on a hit a button in their and then l can get my key out. Is this problem in the switch or is it in the column itself, can you tell me and let me know what has to be done

I suspect this is a fault on the lock release button .. let ...me know if you need to see any of the diagram's listed ??

Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement
Removal Procedure
CAUTION:Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT CAUTION .

Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE .
CAUTION:Refer to SIR CAUTION .

Disable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
Remove the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .
Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the start position.

Insert the tip of an awl into the access hole (1) of the ignition lock cylinder.
Push down and hold the retaining pin of the ignition lock cylinder.
Release the ignition lock cylinder to the run position.
Remove the ignition lock cylinder by pulling the cylinder away from the steering column.

Installation Procedure
Install the ignition lock cylinder by performing the following procedure:
1.1. Align the positioning locking tab slot on the lock module to the positioning tab on the ignition lock cylinder.
1.2. Push the lock cylinder in until the tab locks in the lock module.
Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .
Enable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE .
Perform the Passlock learn procedure. Refer to PROGRAMMING THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM COMPONENTS .

Ignition Lock Cylinder Case Replacement
Removal Procedure
CAUTION:Refer to SIR CAUTION .

Disable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
Remove the turn signal cancel cam. Refer to Turn Signal Cancel Cam And Steering Shaft Upper Bearing Spring Replacement .
Remove the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement .
Slide the PASSKEY(R) III (2) off of the ignition lock cylinder case (1).

Remove the connector (2) from the theft deterrent control module (3).
Remove the TORX(R) head screw (1) from the theft deterrent control module (3).

Remove the theft deterrent control module (2) from the ignition lock cylinder case (1).

Remove the key alarm connector (1) from the ignition lock cylinder case (2).
8.1. Rotate the key alarm connector (1) 90 degrees.
8.2. Pull the key alarm connector (1) out of the ignition lock cylinder case (2).

Remove the 2 tapping screws (2) from the ignition switch assembly (1).
Let the ignition switch assembly (1) hang freely.

Important: The lock bolt assembly (4) is under slight spring tension from the lock bolt spring (3). Hold the lock bolt (4) in place while removing the ignition lock cylinder case (2).
Remove the 3 pan head tapping screws (1) from the ignition lock cylinder case (2).
Remove the ignition lock cylinder case (2) from the steering column tilt head assembly (5).
Remove the lock bolt assembly (4) from the steering column tilt head assembly (5).
Remove the lock bolt spring (3) from the lock bolt assembly (4).

Installation Procedure
Install the lock bolt spring (3) into the steering column tilt head assembly (5).
Position the cutout in the lock bolt assembly (4) at the 6 o'clock position.
Install the lock bolt assembly (4) into the steering column tilt head assembly (5).
Push the lock bolt assembly (4) into the steering column tilt head assembly (5) until the lock bolt assembly (4) is flush with the steering column tilt head assembly (5).
Align the ignition lock cylinder case (2) with the steering column tilt head assembly (5).
NOTE:Refer to FASTENER NOTICE .

Screw the 3 pan head tapping screws (1) into the ignition lock cylinder case (2).
Tighten
Tighten the screws to 7 N.m (62 lb in).

CAUTION:Refer to SIR INFLATOR MODULE COIL CAUTION .

Install the ignition switch assembly (1) onto the ignition lock cylinder case.
Screw the 2 tapping screws (2) into the ignition switch assembly (1).
Tighten
Tighten the screws to 1.5 N.m (13 lb in).

Install the theft deterrent control module (2) onto the ignition lock cylinder case (1).

Screw the TORX(R) head screw (1) into the theft deterrent control module (3).
Tighten
Tighten the screw to 1.5 N.m (13 lb in).
Reconnect the connector (2) to the theft deterrent control module (3).

Install the key alarm connector (1) onto the ignition lock cylinder case (2).
12.1. Push the key alarm connector (1) into the ignition lock cylinder case (2).
12.2. Rotate the key alarm connector 90 degrees so that the key alarm connector (1) locks into place.
Install the ignition lock cylinder.
