Fuel pump relay location?

I was wondering if you could either email me a diagram or tell me which relay it would be that runs my fuel ump on my 98 ford ranger 3.0L (manual) because I was driving home the other day and my truck died on me. So I thought it was the fuel pump. I put a new one in and now my truck is not getting fuel to the engin at all. I checked the safe switch and that wasnt the problem. Me and my father have narrowed it down to either the relay or an inline fuse (if there is one). So if you could send me a labeled diagram or something that would be very helful.

The fuel pump relay is located int he PDC under the hood. Here is a guide and a diagram (Below) that shows its location

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers, Ken

Ok, I identified the red wire at the relay socket. Tested it for pwr. We have keyed power at the red in fpr socket.

Sorry Bud, hate to tell you this but you have a problem with the computer control of the fuel pump relay. Have the computer tested before you replace it.

I was driving my truck the other day and all of a sudden I began to lose power until it came to a complete stop. I tried turning the key to start and it just cranks over but never starts. The cranking sounds normal. I also heard the Fuel Relay clicking very very fast and loud Open/Close when the key was turned to the on position and I also see the check engine light flashing dimly. I swapped out that relay with the A/C relay which are the same and the same thing happens. I also put the A/C relay on the PCM relay position and the fuel pump relay still click off/on very fast. I tested the relay and the OHM reading was 61 which indicates it's fine right? The Fuel Pump relay is the only one that clicks very fast. When I remove the PCM relay the Fuel Pump relay does nothing and makes no sound. Also, if I spray starter fluid down the intake I can get the car started and keep it running.
I should add when the key is in the "on" position but not starting the car, I not only hear the Fuel Pump Relay clicking fast, but I can also hear the fuel pump clicking in the tank.

Any ideas? Thank you!

Hello,

This sounds like the fuel pump relay could be bad and needs to replaced. I have a link for you down below that will explain how to bench test a relay.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-an-electrical-relay-and-wiring-control-circuit

So I will also add that I have owned a 1996 2WD Ford Ranger and a 1997 4WD Ford Ranger before and I had a problem with the 1996 fuel pump relay not staying connected into the fuse box. What I mean by this is that the wires that go onto the pins of the relay had the female terminals spread out and I was getting a bad connection on the control side of the relay causing it to not work. I wrestled with this problem for a while, as it happened intermittently, and I finally fixed the issue by removing the fuse panel and re-crimping the female terminals of the effected wires so that they made good steady contact with the relay pins, then reinstalled the fuse panel. Having said that, let's bench test the fuel pump relay and get back to us with what you are able to find out. We can go from there.

Thanks,
Alex

My ranger is not getting power to the fuel pump. I checked the fuses and the relay switch, put 12V on pump and it works but when attached it does not.

Any ideas.
Thanks

Check power at the bottom of the fuel pump relay on the pump feed side and see if you have power there, that way we can narrow it down and go from there. You can turn key to run and see if the relay clicks on for 2 seconds and sends power on the fuel pump wire

My 95 ford ranger had a new fuel pump installed in 2006 and a new fuel filter, now going down the road the engine just stops getting fuel, then I stop and the engine starts again, it seems to be happening about 3 times a day now, could it be the relay or something like that? Thanks

Very well could be a failing relay, thats the first place to start since the fuel pump relay is simple to replace and easy on the wallet.
