Neutral safety switch?

I have to splice the start wire into the neutral safety switch. What color are these wires? From the ignition switch.

Tested the neutral switch using the Haynes repair Manuel on 2000 Corolla automatic transmission.

Using ohms park pin 1 and 6 nothing.

Neutral pins 2-3 nothing

drive pins 6-8 nothing

2nd gear pins -6-9 nothing

low gear pins 4-6 nothing

pins 1-4 got ohm sound.

Pins 6-7 got ohm sound.

On the harness side voltage on pin 1-4 and

pins 6-7 voltage all else o.O volts.

I adjusted the switch in parks and in neutral nothing.

Could not remove the switch, it was frozen on the transmission shaft; had to drill the center and pry it off damaging the switch.

The guts or center part of the rotating switch, that is still on the shaft can't get it out.

The ball with the sliding arms making contact with the shifter contacts broke off inside the switch and the steal ball is attached to transmission gear shaft its permanently welled to transmission shaft.

I need some help thank you!

I think I understand what you are dealing with but can you get a picture of what the shaft looks like now?

If I understand it correct and the park/neutral switch is broken off and just the center section is left then you will most likely need to cut it off if you can't pry it off.

Let me know if this is the case and if you can get a picture of it and we will try to come up with some ideas. I attached the process for your review just in case you see something you may have missed.

Yes, you are visually picking up my words exactly the inside of the safety switch is still on the transmission shaft.

I did read your removal illustrations it should have come off easily according to instructions. It broke off with the innards still on the shaft of transmission.

Pictures will be taken tomorrow and uploaded to you it's night time in NJ.

Got it. Thanks. Seeing it will help me give you the best method of cutting it off because I suspect that is what you are going to have to do. What happens with these is the shaft will corrode and seize this on there. It is not easy getting off but clearly you don't need to worry about trying to save it. We just want to use the best method to keep from damaging the shaft now as well.

I will wait to see the pictures and we can go from there. Thanks

Hello Tech KaseKenny1,

enclosed are a wide variety of photos of the safety switch to Corolla 2000; transmission shaft with welded parts from safety switch to be cut off how and with what tool; damaged lever cable bolt n shaft tip of transmission snapped off; you will see it in photos progression.

Perhaps the broken bolt n stem can be welded on or puddy welded?

Grateful to have your interest and guidance in a very serious matter regarding the transmission from further damages, thanks.

Hello KaseKenny1,

I do not understand the park neutral safety switch speed concept. I assumed reverse drive 2nd gear and first gear is 4 speed not counting park. Do one count park as well, then it would be a 5 speed, I do not understand it. Does one count what comes after Drive in my case Drive; 2nd and 1st gear make it 3 speed. Please educate me.

Yeah. You will need to cut that off at this point. I use an air cut off tool (Pictured below) and cut it on the red line I put on your picture. You want to make sure you stop before you get to the shaft because you don't want to cut a groove in that. It is not the end of the world if you do, you will just need to smooth it out so the new sensor will go on.

The way this works is this sensor simply tells the PCM that the vehicle is in park or neutral so it is okay to start the engine. As for the overall unit, it is a 4 speed. You only count the forward gears. Your vehicle has 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and overdrive for 4 speeds/gears. I attached some info about this as well.

I am in the Philippines and have a 98 Toyota Corolla LS GLI and some times it will not start in park and have to start it in natural. I bought a new battery heavy duty yesterday and out of starting it 20 times to day 2 times it would not start and had to start it in N I live part time in Cebu Philippines and was thinking of taking it to a mechanic in the city that has worked on it before. But where is the neutral safety switch located and can it go out of adjustment. Please answer to norman243@yahoo. The park / neutral position switch is located on the left side of the transaxle. It can be adjusted by loosening its' retaining bolts, position gearshift to neutral, then aligning neutral line on the switch with the groove on the shaft. Hold the switch in this position and then tighten the retaining bolts.
