Power Steering And No Brakes - SOLVED

92 Astro van lost both power steering and power brake assist. It has the hydro-boost.
The power steering pump is the most likely cause of the problem.
My problem in particular was first off I had a seal leak in the top of the steering box. This caused a little loss of pressure but not much. However moisture got into the system and began the slow process of breakdown.
During freezing weather the hydro-boost seals froze and blew out because of the moisture in the system.
The power steering pump was also completely shot.

My fix (expensive) was to replace the hydro boost with a junk yard used one($200), the steering box with a junk yard used one ($50) and a brand new power steering pump ($110).
I did this all myself to save the cost of labour (4 to 6 hours).

Once installed the brake and power steering came back on instantly.

If you have this problem on your vehicle, here is how to check it.
1)Visually check the entire sytsem for signs of leaking power steering fluid. The fluid resovoir, The top of the steering box, the hydro boost, the power steering pump and the fluid lines.
2)While engine is running, undo the fluid lines one at a time that lead into the booster. Are you getting fluid blasting out at you from any line? If no pump is bad, replace it.
If yes, pump is ok. The CHECK VALVE inside the hydro boost is stuck. Replace hydro boost.

When replacing any of these parts it is always a smart idea to replace the rubber hoses and clamps with new ones.

Hopefully this will help a lot a people with the same problem.

The brake booster is operated by the power steering pump so check your drive belt, pump and fluid level. If no problem found you may have a bad pump.

This past Saturday I went to take a drive town in my van I had just got back from town and my brakes where working fine when I went to leave angina I started out and had not got to the end of my drive and the brake pedal went to the floor and I had no brakes put fluid in the master and pumped on the the brakes and saw I had no fluid in the back reservoir but the front did keep some in it parked the van on my carport put some more fluid in and pumped them again got out and noticed that the fluid had leaked out on the ground and it was next to the driver side tire took it to some one to look at he said that it might be in the distribution box but he couldn't put the van on a lift to due to the van sat to low how can I fix the brake problem

Please use some punctuation, otherwise that huge sentence can be read multiple ways and most don't make sense. How you fix it depends on what's leaking, and you didn't specify the left front or left rear wheel. There is no such thing as a distribution box related to the brake hydraulic system, so I don't know if the mechanic is referring to some other part to indicate the approximate location on the truck or if he's referring to a brake system part.

Why is the truck sitting too low? Has the suspension system been altered or are the springs just weak? The mechanic still should have been able to crawl underneath to locate the leak without putting the van on a hoist.
