I have ajusted the valve clearence (.012 in) twice in the last month on my 1988 Nissan Z24 (4 cyl. 8 plugs, 8 valves) engine. I run it up to operating temp. Ajusted the first group with #1 at TDC and then the rest with #4 at TDC. The ajusting screws don't appear to be backing off.
