Overheating

1987 merc topaz 120,000 miles. The car overheats. It doesn't lose any coolant the radiator is still full but it overheats. If I run the heater at full blast it helps to keep it down just a little but this usually starts within 3 miles of leaving somewhere stone cold. Is this due to the thermastat? What other issues could it be? I don't want to get ripped off at the mechanics so would like to know what it might be before I take it in somewhere to be repaired.
