1996 Mercury Marquis Loss of power

Engine Performance problem
1996 Mercury Marquis V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic high miles

I live in Arizona and when ever I try to take a drive in the mountains after about twenty minutes of highway driving, my car (which is a Grand Marquis, don't know if that makes a difference) loses power going uphill.
The car is still running but there is virtually no response from the pedal. Only response is when I back off it I will get a brief surge of power but the car is basically doa. I have to pull over, put the car in park for a minute or two and go on again.
After the first time is does that and I take off again, it will go for a few miles and the cycle repeats.
Once I'm back in the city, take off speed is dead. The car has to cool off almost completely and it will be pretty much back to its normal. Over night and it is
