Engine Performance problem
1989 Mercury Cougar 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 100000 miles
We have a 89' mercury cougar xr7. Recently the tachometer starts sticking at 0 while driving, then it jerks and finally stalls. It doesn't seem to do it quite as much at high speeds. Sometimes it doesn't want to start when you first go out and start it either it'll turn over, but won't start. Then finally it catches itself and starts right up. Check engine light never comes on and isn't on when this occurs. Please help me find a solution to this problem.
If its cranking over and refuses to start-check for fuel and spark-do below
Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it
