Steering problem
1974 Mercury Cougar V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 152000 miles

My niece just obtained a 74 Cougar XR7. The rag joint in the steering shaft is bad (the rubber is gone). I bought a repair kit (new rubber and bolts), but it looks like I need to remove the steering column to get at the rag joint. I've already loosened the bottom part of the coupler from the steering box input and it slides almost all the way off. Problem is, I can't seem to figure out how to remove the steering column, and there's no procedure in either my Chilton's or Motor's manual. Can you tell me how to get the steering column out of the car so I can repair the rag joint? Or what manual to get to tell me? I already have the electricals and column shifter linkage disconnected.

Do you
have the same problem?
