Engine Mechanical problem
1988 Mercedes Benz 300e 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 140000 miles

Engine starts fine and performs smoothly without missing a beat. After driving 5 miles to normal operating temperature, and switching off engine, engine will sometimes crank over but not start, with pistons firing sporadically. If it does finally start, car again runs perfectly.

Replaced spark plugs and wires 12 months ago. Battery in good shape; 3 years old. Replaced alternator last month as mechanic recommended 12 volt charge should be closer to 13.5 volt. Replaced timing belt at same time. Better, but car still prone to above-described behaviour from time to time. So far, will not act up when mobile mechanic on site. Could this be a fuel pump/clogged fuel filter problem?
