Engine Mechanical problem
1988 Mazda 323 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 40189 miles

Inherited an '88 Mazda 323 with 40K original miles. The car prior was having a belt squealing problem with the alternator. Belt runs the water pump and alternator via the crankshaft pulley.

Recently replaced the alternator as it seems it was slightly undercharging at 2000 RPM.

Put a new belt on and it got chewed up apparently because it seems to possibly have a pulley alignment problem. I've read that it may need to be shimmed.

Could it also be a mounting bracket problem? A slight depth mismatch between the old and new alternator?

Recently had the timing belt and water pump changed out since the car is twenty years old and had the original timing belt, etc.

I loosened the adjustment bracket and supporting bracket and tweaked it back with a metal bar. Problem solved.
