2004 Mazda 3 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 86000 miles

I recently had my oil pan replaced by a mechanic. My mazda dealership told me that the part number is L372-10-400F. The part the mechanic used was L372-10-400E. I was told that the letter designation at the end of the part number goes by the latest year. No if my 2004 was the first year the mazda 3 was made how can they use an oil pan from a prior year unless they are using a pan that would go on a protege. If that is the case is it possible for that pan to go on my mazda 3 and work or will it end up giving me problems?
