Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Lexus GS 300 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 74500 miles

I have bought an used 1998 lexus GS300. After runningg 1 good year, now I may have a problem such as a back fire when the engine hot (or after running about 15-30 miles). A mechanic said it may be the spark plug coil or the engine timing is a little bit off. So here is my question:

There are a timing mark from 10---0, what number the timing mark should align with? Now, when he investigate the timong belt, he saw two white dos on the cam shafts align with the cover mark and the timing mark line is aligned with number 0. Is it right?

Please help.
