You will need to disconnect the battery first and then raise the car up safely.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/jack-up-and-lift-your-car-safely

Here is a guide that will show you what you are in for when doing the job

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-replace-a-starter-motor

Here are the book procedures, see if you missed out anything.

Removal & Installation

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove 2 upper bolts from intake manifold bracket. Raise and support vehicle. On M/T, remove clutch slave cylinder and push it aside.

2. On all models, remove lower intake manifold bracket bolts and bracket. Remove 2 upper starter bolts and a lower bolt. Pull starter from clutch (M/T) or converter (A/T) housing and prop in place. From above, disconnect starter solenoid "S" and "B" terminal connectors. From below, push transmission harness aside and remove starter.

3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Rotate starter to provide proper clearance. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification.

Here is what it will be like on your car (below)

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers, Ken

I have a kia sportage 2001 model. It is a very good car. Clutch, gears everything was perfect. The starter motor died. I had it changed. I gave the car to a mechanic whom I know nothing about to change the starter motor as he was the only person who had a starter motor for the car. After the starter motor was changed the clutch is not engaging properly, by this I mean, when I press the clutch pedal, the clutch is not fully engaged and it is difficult to change gears. If I keep the gear in either first or reverse and start the car with the clutch pedal fully depressed, the car starts moving. When the engine is running if I keep the car in first gear or reverse gear and with the clutch pedal fully depressed the car starts moving immediately even before I release the clutch. What can be the reason?

Please help, thanks.

He may have disconnected the clutch slave cylinder to gain access for the starter and now there is air in the system. You should bring it back to him as it is likely his responsibility.

Hi,

Had he disconnected the slave cylinder, then it would have been possible for the fluid to come out and the level in the reservoir would have gone down is it not. Because the level in the clutch fluid reservoir has not reduced and I was standing next to the car while he changed the starter motor and I did not see any fluid dripping from the car. I also want you to know that the mechanic asked his junior who is a new comer with no experience to do the job. He initially removed the alternator and showed it to me that he was going to replace it. Then I told him that it was the starter motor and not the alternator. Then he fit the alternator back and removed the starter motor. He spent more than two hours trying to remove the starter motor and another one hour to fit it back. After finishing the work, they kept the car in the hoist, started the car, applied the gears and ran the wheels to see if everything was working. I found it strange. Could it be anything else, could he have forgotten to fit anything else back?

There is no question that you have a problem with the hydraulic clutch. The only issue is whether someone is to blame for this or not.

What you are saying is correct, I have already blamed the mechanic. What I would like to know is,

1. What do I have to do to fix it?

2. How much will it cost me?

Thanks.

I can't tell you that without looking at your car. I can tell you which system is working right but I can't tell you what is specifically failing or damaged.

If the starter is replaced, is this different from a neutral switch or by replacing the starter & core will this solve the problem?

This is very involved, you have to take off the air flow tube, then the intake aluminum tube box with throttle body, battery, jack up passenger side for clearence and of course use good jack stands. Once you got clear access you still have to be a contorshunist to get to the 4 bolts( some have 3), one bolt comes in from back to front while the others go front to back. Disconnect all harnesses to starter motor. The top bolt is a real pill, but can be got to if you are flexable and can stand pain. But it can be done.

4cyl? If so removal of the intake manifold bracket is required underneath, also the emissions canister & valves need to be removed topside. Starter is removed from underneath, canister allows access to top inner bolt on starter.
