My car has been overheating and yet there are no leaks that I can find anywhere. A licensed mechanic checked it out. I did replace the radiator cap which was cracked and broken in the seal. It still overheats every now and then. I also have trouble starting the car while the engine is cold. It does start but, has a little trouble in the morning and then all during the day it has no trouble at all after that. It has also backfired twice with a puff of white smoke and then nothing more. What could possibly cause the car to backfire with a puff of white smoke?

First, has the thermostat been checked? Has the cooling system been flushed? Where did the white puff of smoke come from, the exhaust?
