Are you getting spark and fuel to the engine? Will it start with starting fluid? When you turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine over can you hear the fuel pump run in the tank for 5 seconds?

Please run down this guide and report back.

Scan for codes and check crank sensor. Do wiggle test on crank sensor connector if it starts you'll need another connector. Check fuses underhood.

Where would you find it? I looked for it yesterday and then call a auto parts and they said there is not a listing of one on that model. I was getting power to my coil but fire out of the spark plug. So have replaced the rotary button, distributor cap, and coil Checked rotary button to see if if was spinning it was. I am getting fuel to the fuel injectors.

If you are getting a nice spark to the dist cap then sand down the contacts inside the cap and make sure the cap isn't cracked and wire from coil is good. Ya know I love autoparts guys they will tell you anything you want to hear. See pic for sensor location.

Ya know when you guys say it won't start say it won't turn over that is a whole different ballgame. The crank sensor is magnetic. First you check your battery for condition including load test autoparts can do it. Does it not turn over or not run what is your fuel pressure like asked in very first reply? I really think this is to much for you. Ittells the module when to fire. Have you check ed fuses underhood or only in dash. Check the coil with an ohm meter shold be 9.5-1.20 between small terminals an d11,000-14,000 between negative terminal and large output where the plug wire goes. If out of range then the coil is shot. I have no further comments or suggestions.

The colder the mornings have gotten, the harder it is to start. I've noticed that when I turn the key to the 'on' position, if I wait in silence - not turning the starter over - I wait until I hear a rapid clicking sound, then when I engage the starter the motor starts every time. If I turn the starter over before I hear the clicking sound it will not start- it just turns over. I've had a friend turn the key to 'on' while I'm beneath the hood before, and I found the clicking is coming from the power distribution box- specifically the relays are clicking- I can feel it with my fingers. I have replaced both the starter and fuel pump relay switches, but problem still exists. I have replaced the fuel pump also. It seems the problem is electrical, I'm wondering is it the computer? I should note that the battery has plenty of juice, and the starter acts as it should every time I turn it over.

I'm having the same problem. 1995 2.5 L. Replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor. ECT tests in range. Seems to hold fuel pressure overnight. I've noticed that often the check engine light does not come on and codes will not display. I turn the ign off for several seconds and try again, often many times, the engine will not start. Eventually the light comes on and the engine will start and it runs just fine. Sometimes it takes several hours. Once I opened the hood and let the sun heat the engine for a couple of hours and it started right up; may be a coincidence. Getting only the meaningless codes 12 and 33 for the past several weeks, including before it got cooler overnight and started having this trouble.

Good morning.

I would start by verifying power at the fuel injectors and ignition coil. You should see power for about 2-3 seconds when the key is first turned on. After that, power should be continuous while the engine is cranking or running. See the attached diagrams of the injector and ignition coil wiring. The dark green w/orange tracer are the 12v power supply circuits(which are highlighted). If you do have power, we'll then have to determine if the injectors/coil are getting a signal from the PCM to fire. If there isn't power, we'll have to trace down that side of the system.

Let me know what you find!

Seems an error has been detected in the engine management system and when the CEL turns on, the component concerned has been disable whereby the engine computer would revert to back-up mode for the sensor. You would need to retrieve the trouble code to understand what is wrong and continue from there.

Lets start with the basics. Test the fuel pressure and compare it to a manual and see if its in specs. Next test for fire at the plugs. Let us know from here what you have. Curt

I bought this jeep this summer. Worked fine. Then when it started to get cold, it started to get hard to start. I took it to my mechanic and they started to replace stuff on it, first the starter, then the fuel pump. I can't even think of everything that we have replaced! It is now 20 degrees and it has been towed twice and they can't get it started! They have had it for a week. Can't figure out what the problem is. It was none of the things we have fixed! I have read on the internet that this is a problem with wranglers and no one seems to know what causes this. Can you help me please! I have spent over $4000. They are now working on it for free.

They have checked this. They even rebuilt the relay system. He said that it's getting fuel but not spark. Sorry, I am trying to communicate to you what he is telling me!
