I have a 1995 jeep grand cherokee laredo with appro 179.000 miles. Recently I have noticed a noise when shifting from park to drive. Drive to reverse. It is a "clanking" noise. Upon investigation. When vehicle is in neutral.I have considerable "play" in the drive shaft.I have noted in previous vehicles that I have owned that changing the u-joints corrected similiar problems.I am concerned that this may go deeper than that.I do not notice the play particularly coming from the u-joint itself. It appears that it is coming from the yoke at the rear end. What am I up against. Thanks for your help.

U joints have a 0 tollerance for lateral play. Replace the U joints 1st and then get back to me. If a U joint fails and the shaft drops you will be in deep kimshi!
