Hi, recently my vehicle started giving me problems. First, it started backfiring and the gas pedal would give out for a few seconds, then it started stalling out, to now the dash won't work. It stays running for a second and shuts off. My dad who worked on cars his whole life looked at the ground wires, the cluster box, all the fuses, and other wires, changed the brain, and can't seem to find the problem. Any help is appreciated.

Hello,

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak or a weak fuel pump. here are two guides to help us see what's going on:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-an-engine-vacuum-gauge

and

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-fuel-system-pressure-and-regulator

You can rent a gauge for free at the auto parts store.

Fuel pressure should be - Fuel System Pressure

Fuel System Operating Pressure 339 kpa +/- 34 kpa (49.2 +/- 5 psi) psi
Fuel Pump Capacity 1/4 liter in seconds L

Please let us know what happens.

Engine Performance problem
2000 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 200K miles

Hi, A month ago I got an oil flush at an oil change shop (didn't know even dealers don't flush engines - who do I trust.) Anyway, shortly after my engine started making a ticking or knocking sound.

I thought with 200,000+ miles on my jeep I was due for a flush. Now, my jeep won't idle at stops and the oil pressure gauge starts going down and then my little engine that could starts sounding like the little engine that couldn't, you know kind of like it's sad (sorry, I'm a woman, I deal with matters of the heart better than matters of metal :)

Anyway, what do you think?

Thanks for your help.

The flush shouldn't have hurt anything. How loud is the noise? Also, has the check engine light come on? Finally, has the oil pressure gauge ever dropped to a point that concerns you?

Hi. Thank you for your response.

The noise was never very loud and seems to come and go.

The check engine light never went on.

The oil pressure gauge would start dropping at a stop light to where I would get nervous but if I gassed the car, it would come back up. My jeep was at the point of stalling out if I didn't press on the gas.

So, here's what it was.

I ended up taking it to a jeep dealer and spoke with the manager who had summoned a technician to speak with me (I had called and spoken with the manager, not knowing who I was speaking to, about my problem earlier in the day.) Anyway, the tech concluded that what I had was a stalling problem and said he's pretty sure it was the IAC motor.

He did a diagnosis, saw there was a problem with the IAC, took it out, said the spring or whatever it's called was not going back in, he replaced my IAC motor and whalla! No more stalling problem!

It's funny how thrilled I am now at stopping at red lights just to hear my mean machine back to it's old mean self (as in still powerful and at 200,000+ miles!)

Thanks for helping out. I hope this summary is able to help others, too.

I'm glad you got it fixed. THe reason I asked about the engine light was to help determine if it was an Idle air control valve (IAC) or the throtle position sensor (TPS). Both can cause this type of problem.

THanks for your reply. I'm sure it will help others.

The Jeep will not idol at a consistant RPM. I'm thinking idol control valve or motor. Any idea where it is located on this model?

My jeep will not stay running. It will start to crank and not start unless I put the gas pedal to the floor. I remove my foot and it stalls. It did this for about 20 minutes. Then it turned over and ran fine for a week. Then it did it again yeaterday for 20 minutes. But now its running fine. When it cranking over it sounds strained when im having the issue. But then all of a sudden it sounds normal cranking and it runs like a top.

1st, is your Check Engine Light on? If so, a popular auto parts store can "Code" you, usually it is Free...write down the codes, bring 'em back!

If none, check this out!

This is EZ to find/ remove/ clean...."could" be your problem

This one so happens to be My Wife's Ford Escape

Yours is very similar!

Check and clean out the throttle plates and make sure its completely closing. Check the vacuum lines for leaks. Also take out the idle air motor make sure the pintle on it is moving freely. And the ports where it hooks up on throttle body is clean.
