You need to scan for trouble codes, that will help pinpoint where to look for your problem.

These guides will help us fix it.

Recently the service light came on. I had the car serviced. The service light came on again and when increasing speed the transmission would not shift up as normal when the speed increases. The jeep dealer said I should replace the battery. The battery seems to be perfectly fine. This diagnosis does not seem to make sense. Can you help?

Don

Sadly you have some major tranny problems. It is a fact that the Catera has a Peugeot transmission and an Opel engine. It is most difficult to repair. You may be able to have the computer re-set but I doubt it will fix the problem. Big Bucks Good luck

Our jeeps check engine light came on and would not dowshift to first on a stop. It ran fine and shifted fine otherwise, we just had no first gear. My wife was not driving when it started, she started it and said the light came on. This makes me think that maybe it is a ensor related problem wha do you think?

You can try a self-diagnostic test. To activate self diagnostic program:

With the ignition switch in the OFF position, depress the TRIP and RESET buttons.
While holding the TRIP and RESET button turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Continue to hold the TRIP and RESET buttons until the word CODE appears in the odometer windows (about five seconds ) then release the buttons. If a problem exists, the system will display Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's). If no problem exists, the code 999 (End Test) will momentarily appear.
Post the results.

My '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee will not shift out of second gear. Reverse is fine. Sometimes it starts out in 1st and wont shift. Sometimes it starts out in second and wont shift. I checked the transmission fluid and its ok.

My jeep limited 2003 has been working fine from when I bought it with 69,000 miles. Now at 85,000 miles my gears are all messed up and I know my transmission is messed up. I took it to a specialist he said I need to rebuild the transmission (almost all say that, to rip people off). I wanted to know if there is something else I can do.

When I drive the car, it kicks at around 30mph I am assuming it is not shifting gears right. When the specialist put it on the machine he said it has to do with my 4th gear clutch and he needs to rebuild the transmission at $1400. Does this sound right?

To shed a clarity on your paranoia. Not to say you aren't partially correct.

Often when you go into a transmisison and need to replace part x, there are other parts that are also on the verge of failure. This is often the reason for the rebuild recommendation. IF he goes in and replaces part X and gets it back togather and the next weakest link goes immediatly. Who should have to pay to go back in?

Were there any codes in the pcm?

Transmission Problemms are a bear to a backyard mechanic, about all you can do is change fluid and filter. Sounds like your xmission is having a problem completing the shift from one gear to the next. When is the last time the fluid and filter WAS changed? Is your fuild level too low? Have you hit it with a sledgehammer yet?

When we put the jeep into reverse you can feel it engage but when you press the accellerator it goes no where. When it goes in drive, it will not shift out of 1st gear. You can drive in 2nd gear if you put the transmission in 2nd gear. Fluid is full and clear. What could be the issue? I don't want to hear from the repair shop it needs a new or rebuilt transmission. Thanks!

Hi there,

The first thing that I would do is get a scan done and check for any unresolved transmission electrical issues, do this first as this will give us a better idea as to what is going on.

My Jeep was running great, then one day I stopped at a light and when I accelerated again, it would not shift, the rpms just kept rising. I pulled over, went through the gears and when I went to the regular drive position the vehicle was starting out in 2 gear instead instead of first. Then it started operating correctly for two days and check engine light even went out. Now its doing the same thing again. Any idea what might be wrong? Thanks chris

For starters have the PCM (computer) scanned for codes, Autozone will do it for free. If the PCM sees a problem it will store a code that will help in diagnosing the problem, get back with the exact codes

Thanks for your super quick response. I did as you suggested and the codes that were saved are: P 1762, P1757 The Jeep seems to be running perfect for the last 3 days. I'm a part changer. Is this something I can fix? Thanks again, Chris

Those are both governer pressure codes, not real sure if it will be a DIY project to fix. Will require some diagnostic with a meter and scanner to fix, the only possibility in the list that looks easy, is to try a trans service it could set codes due to excessive debris in th etrans pan. Try a service first
