Will not shift

Car will start and run. But with the car in drive it is only in 3rd gear. One tech said that it may be the computer, is not telling it what gear to be in. Could it just be a electrical issue. No problem till a check engine light came on the other day. It is not the fluid level. Thanks for your help. T is the 08 accent hatchback, the base model, automatic

An error has been detected by the transmission control unit and it is now locked in the Limp-mode.
You need to have the trouble code retrieved and find out what is causing the problem.

Transmission problem 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

When I head out on the highway after about 15 to 20 minutes if I have to slow down for traffic lights or merging on a clover leaf off the highway going down to 30 miles an hour, as the Overdrive transmission shifts down a gear, it stays in this lower gear and as I speed back up to highway speeds the transmission will not shift back into over drive. The RPM climbs to 4000 RPM and I have to pull over and turn the car off. Then restart the motor and the transmission will shift properly again. This goes on till the next time I slow down and the transmission will either ruffly down shift with a jerk or it will shift down but stay hung up again in a lower gear causing high RPM's. It is intermittent as it will not do this on every trip ! What are some possible causes and repairs. Thanks alot need a good reliable car ASAP as I need this car every day.

Hello,

This sounds like a transmission pressure solenoid that is going out and needs to be replaced but to be sure lets run the codes to confirm the failure.

Here are the locations of the solenoids if needed. Sometime codes wont come up for this problem.

Also I have seen where the PCM can fail causing this issue as well.

Thank you for taking the time to help me. I thought I would let you know what happened. I took it to a shop and they changed out the PCM for a tune of $450.00 but at least the car is running.

Car won't shift out of 1st gear, or go into reverse, checked trans. Fluid it is blackish color not reddish.

Hi terrirobinson07,

Symptoms indicates either the transmission has failed internally or the controls are faulty. Get a scan done to retrieve for trouble codes and let me know if any found.

At morning I start the engine and drive for a while the automatic transmission not shifting I think it start at third gear and still until I switch off the engine and start again, then automatic transmission works normal.

Check fluid level and have a trans guy scan for codes it may be a seal in cluch pak not working til it heats up

Thank you for your response I check the fluid level its OK but when I remove the Automatic transmission pan I found some metal swarf, then I return the same oil and close the pan again
the mechanic told me that gear number four is worn out but I don't trust him.

Itf the metal you found in your pan was just like dusty style but wet then that is normal. If it's larger pieces like small shavings then there is a problem inside and can be a thrust bushing going or bearing. It may be moving to far on shafts causing your problem. To where the seals on the shaft are not holding well. See pic arrows point to seal as an example. If thrust bearings are bad you end up with to much end play in shafts so it skips gears

it's a large pieces like this (-) and no skips gears it's just stuck at number three gear and then not go to four and not going to two gear either until switch off the engine and start again then every thing back to normal.

Hello, I was recenty driving my wifes car and I was excelerating to enter the freeway and the transmission just went out and it just reved the engine. I can drive the car only about 15 miles an hour as it will not shitf out of 1st gear or into reverse. Someone has told me that there are electrical plugs on top of the trans for each gear and if they go out it can cause this problem and my transmission itself might not be bad. Is this true? And if so how do I check them? I never had any trans problems with this car before this, no slipping or anything. I checked the fluid and it is full. Please help me I am on limited funds and cannot take it into a shop. Thank you so much

Hello,

Sorry, we hadn't gotten to your question before now.

Ok, your vehicle is in what is called Fail Safe or Limp Mode.

There are a few possibilities.

First is the Engine Light On? If so and you can take it by your local parts store and have them pull codes and post them here.

If no engine light then most likely it is the tranny and it will need to be rebuilt or purchase a remanufactured one. Unless it is still under warrantee.

It is a transmission problem, and when the same problem happened to me, the check engine light did come on. It turned out being the overdrive hub and other clutches that had burned out. It cost over 2grand to get it fixed and replaced, roughly $800 more than a dealership would give me for trading the car in while it's working. Great!

Still under warranty, but dealer and factory rep are clueless.

Taken in for failure to shift into overdrive when cold and rough (slamming) shift points.

#1) Dealer recommended new brake pads, rotors, and calipers; they are near minimum and will be replaced as soon as car is behaving normally; Dealer went ahead and replaced the power brake booster and master cylinder - no effect

#2) Dealer replaced transmission (including torque converter) and transmission control module - car would not shift into overdrive at all.

#3) Dealer found damaged wiring connector and repaired - car still refuses to shift into overdrive when cold (20 - 30 deg F), even when engine is fully warmed up it takes 4 miles at 30 - 45 mph before we get overdrive, but works fine even with engine cold at 55 F+ ambient.

Dunno if its the same set up with Toyotas but it uses the coolant temperature sensor to command and control the overdrive operation in a given temperature, wont hurt to check the CTS

Just got it (99,700 miles under warranty) back from the dealer after 3 months; turned out to be intermittent open in the O/D switch on the shifter. Apparently, the light on the dash is wired in parallel with the transmission control module and does not neccessarily indicate proper signal to the transmission.
