New wheel bearings?

Hello, the noise I have been hearing has been getting worse. When I come to a stop under fifteen MPH, but the worst ten to fifteen MPH I hear a weird noise like a woo. When I am going slow around a parking low and turning I hear the same noise and a wo wo wo kind of. That noise is around six to eight MPH.

Hello, I'm Danny.

It sounds like you are having an issue with the front hub assembly. Here is a tutorial showing how to replace a hub assembly:

I have a 2008 honda, civic that is making semi high pitch humming sound when my driving reaches 40-45 mph. It is an errie sound like something bad is about to happen. I suspected ballbearing problem and had found all four wheels snuggly tight when I try to move them, indicative of no loose ballbearings I have not checked any other places if there are ballbearing involved. Can you make a suggestion that can explain what is happening to my car. What caused this stranged loud humming sound?

It is hard to say without hearing it. However, it does sound like a wheel bearing problem. Does the noise change when you are making turns?

I have not yet tested the quality of noice when turning. But I imagine that the sound volume would simply reduced a little because when I turn I would have to slow down a lot. However just turn a wide angle at high speed did not change the sound at all.

Bearings are more likely to be a coarse type of noise and if the noise is high pitched and changes with speed that might be nearer to a whistling noise, check for loose moulding etc that might be whistling due to air passing through it.

You have to press them out and in. The steering knuckle must be removed for this. It is a tedious process.

Labour and parts usually ranges from $200-$300 per side.

I have no vibrations but there is a roaring/ rough noise coming from the front of my car when I drive 25 mph or faster. And when I jack my car up and spin a wheel, it gets a little stuck but when I add a little more strength to spin the wheel, it spins. People said it could be the driveshaft joints, wheel bearings, or differential but i'm not too sure. Can anybody help?

Noise problems you have to settle yourself as we are unable to detemine where is it coming from and it can be anywhere. You need to verify the source.

Since you have jacked up the vehicle, does turning the wheels cause any rough feeling on the lower arms? You can try engaging a low gear and repeating the above. If yes, it should be the wheel nearings.

At about 40mph I hear a noise coming from rear. It almost sounds like exhaust, but when I vary RPM noise does not change, only speed changes sound. Suspect rear wheel bearing assembly. Any way to enusre it is the bearing before I tear into it?

Hi cabb,

Jack up the vehicle, put on stands and release the parking brakes.

Spin the wheel by hand as fast as possible and put your hand on the absorbers. If there is any coarse feeling, the bearing is bad.

Check if the tires wear is normal. Uneven wear would cause noise when travelling.

Hello there! Im wondering if a sevearly warped
brake rotor could damage a wheel bearing?
I just changed my wheel bearing, and in less 100km
its already loose. I was very carefull to press it in using the outer race only, and the job went smoothly. I was planning on replacing the rotor
in the next couple of days, because I know it is badly warped. When I changed the bearing there was no
visible damage to the hub or the knuckle.

The rotor shouldnt cause that, you could have put in too much grease and bunred it up, too little grease and burnt it up. Or installed it improperly. The caliper would move with the rotor and wouldnt really harm the bearing.

What would be the pro/con to obtaining aftermarket wheel bearings? Also, what would a dealer charge, as far as labor hours, to replace each?

Aftermarket brands are fine as long as it's one of the major brands like Timkin or BCA. The flat rate time is 1.5 houirs per side. They are pressed in.

Ever hear of a brand called PartsMaster? What's your take on them if you have?

Do the bearings differ between ABS and non-ABS models? Most websites don't differ, but a few asked to specify.

The ABS shouldn't matter.

Partsmaster is a private brand sold as a low cost substitute. Compare it with the store brands of a supermarket. It may have been made by the majors but you'll never know.
