The A/c quit working suddenly. Here are my observations:
1) All switches on the dashboard work and light up. A/C switch, recirculate, vents etc.
2) Compressor clutch does not engage.
3) Condenser fan does not turn on when A/C is switched on.
4) Both fans work after vehicle has reached running temperature and gets hot. Fans are not the problem, I believe.
5) No voltage is seen on the wire going to the compressor.
6) Pressure switch on the high side does not show continuity.
7) Pressure switch plug contacts show a voltage of 4.7V
8) Have not run a wire to the compressor from the positive terminal of the battery to see if clutch will engage. Afraid since am not sure if the voltage should be battery or lower.
9) Have not shorted the contacts in the pressure switch to see if compressor clutch engages. Not sure if this could lead to damage.
You help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Veej

You may have a leak and are low on refrigerant, your next step will be to go over these guides to help us find the problem.

Hello,
I found that the low side schrader valve is leaking. I heard a hissing sound. I pressed the pin a bit and it stopped. Pressing the pin down does not release any gas. Hence I assume that there is no gas in the system, which also relates to the fact that the pressure switch does not show continuity. I would appreciate if you could please lists the steps that I need to do to refill the system.

To do this job correctly, you need to evacuate the system and check that it holds a vacuum, with the system holding vacuum, you need to hook up a due manifold gauge and a charging unit, there is a precise weight of refrigerant required this must be added exactly as over or under charging will effect the system, using cans and adding refrigerant using guess work is not an option if you want this done correctly.

Hi kaylashae,

Without testing the low and high pressure, how do you know the system requires additional freon?

Seems freon could be overfilled resulting in the compressor cutting out.

When A/C do not cool, you need to confirm if it is the system that is at fault or the air flow which could be due to a faulty air mix motor.

Hi ejamharris,

If the cooling efficiency is good only on high speed, problem could be with the air mix door. Check if the air mix door is operating and linkages are not stuck.

Hi Eliseo,

You need to check if power is being supplied to compressor via relay. If power is present then it should be the clutch or its coil that is bad.

If power is not present, you need to check/test the AC compressor relay.

I have been having an ac problem. The unit is charged but when turning on the ac the compressor engages runs for about a minute or less then disengages. The coolant fan (on radiator) does not run when turning on the ac at all. I have checked fuses and replaced relays with no positive result. Where should I look next to diagnose this isssue. Thanx in advance

Hi micarr,

When the cooling fans does not come on, the pressure would build up in the system and that would cause the compressor to cut off.

This guide can help us fix it

Did you test the fan motors?

Over the past 6 months, my AC has begun to blow room temp air when the car is either going at low speeds or when I am idling. When I am driving 50-60mph, it blows cold air. I took it to a friend of my husbands to look at and he says the AC is charged and it needs a new air compressor for $450. Does this sound accurate? Is there any way I could tell if it's the air compressor? Does an air compressor go out on an Accord with 93000 miles?
Thank you,
Jana

Hi janamay23,

Compressor can be tested by getting the pressure readings while in operation.

There is no actual lifespan of a compressor but after six or seven years of usage it can possibly give way.

If the cooling fans are not working well, low vehicle speed will cause the AC to work below efficiency.

Air Conditioning problem
2000 Honda Accord 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

My A/c keeps going in and out. It'll blow cold air one second then hot air the next. On my console I've noticed that the green buttons go off and on. When off there is no cold air flowing just the fan running. Most of the time the lights kick back on and it'll start blowing cold again. The fuse is ok, my battery is ok, I took it apart and looked over the wiring. Nothing seems out of place. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's possible that you are low on refridgerant and the compressor is cycling on and off because you are just at the tipping point. Any lower and it won't work at all, any higher and it will blow cold. Have a A/C person put a pressure gauge on it to see if your pressure is adequate.
