GRINDIND OR CLICKING SOUND WHEN ENGINE IS SHUT OFF

Usually when it's cold, when I shut the engine off there will be an awful grinding or chattering sound coming from the area of the starter or the front of the driveshaft. When I try to restart the truck, it feels like it is bogged down. I will bump the engine over a few times till it starts normally. The sound it makes when I turn the engine off is comparable to say the sound the wheel makes on The wheel of Fortune as it spins. What can be causing this?

Are you sure the starter isn't staying engaged when you first start the truck?
