Belts and pulleys

Can you run a V-belt around a grooved flat pulley without damage? My 88 Suburban is possessed by the Devil and his son! This thing is KILLIN' me and I spent an hour fighting an alternator with a v-pulley and my crank pulley is a grooved.

Not for long, get the proper alternator with right pulley.
