Service engine soon light

Dear sirs,
I have a 1992 Chevy Lumina Euro and everytime I come to a stop the car goes dead. Today the service engine soon light came on, what should I look for first, or should I take it to a dealer for repairs?

Try going to a local parts store and having the vehicle scanned for codes then tell us what the code is
