Engine Mechanical problem
1997 GMC Jimmy 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 220000 miles

Replaced starter and flywheel. Engine bucks while trying to start and kicks out bendix drive. Suspect ignition problem as had to replace rotor and cap, with cap split. Is it possible for shaft of distributer to be sloppy and cause problem ( o ring worn on shaft.)

Just my opinion, I'd want to see if cranking action is normal, without using the key. You can use a remote starter button, maybe the leads are long enough so your not under the vehicle. If the cranking still acts up, it's not the ignition. Maybe I misunderstood your post?

That purple wire at the starter solenoid S terminal, if it is hot should kick out the pinion gear. If it isn't hot, the pinion gear shouldn't kick out.
