In the tank as part of the pump assembly. This guide should help us fix it but I have included the diesel filter gas filter replacement in the diagrams below.

My truck has the engine check light on. My truck starts fine and runs okay, but only if I give it gas slightly. If I try to give it more gas to pick up speed faster it wants to shut off. So I'm thinking it is the fuel filter that has never been changed out. What do you think is it probably that or something else? I was planning on changing the fuel filter out first. I have seen your video on YouTube of removal of fuel filter with the gasoline coming out. I was told you can disconnect the fuel pump electronics underneath at the drivers side door area and start your truck and just let the fuel inside get used so you do not have gasoline on you. What do you think of that idea?

First, here are the directions for fuel pressure release. The attached pics correlate with the directions. Check out the diagrams (Below).
1. NOTE: The splash shield is located on the LH frame rail under the driver side door.
Disconnect the splash shield and position aside.
2. Disconnect the electrical connector.
3. Start the engine and allow it to idle until it stalls.
4. After the engine stalls, crank the engine for approximately 5 seconds to make sure the fuel rail pressure has been released.
5. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
6. When fuel system service is complete, connect the electrical connector.
7. Reposition the splash shield and install a new pushpin.
8. NOTE: It may take more than one key cycle to pressurize the fuel system.
Cycle the ignition key and wait 3 seconds to pressurize the fuel system. Check for leaks before starting the engine.
9. Install the diagnostic tool. Turn the key ON with the engine OFF. Cycle the key OFF, then ON. Select the appropriate vehicle and engine qualifier. Clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and carry out a PCM reset.
10. Start the vehicle and check the fuel system for leaks.
Next, before replacing the fuel filter, confirm that fuel pressure is low. Here is a link that explains how that is done.

Removal and Installation
WARNING:
- Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and can be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
- Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before servicing or disconnecting any of the fuel lines or fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved to prevent accidental spraying of fuel, causing a fire hazard. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
- There are 2 fuel systems, an early and late build fuel system. The early build system uses a 7.9 mm (5/16 in) fuel line and connectors. The late build uses a 9.5 mm (3/8 in) fuel line and connectors. Do not interchange the 2 fuel line sizes or components because fuel leakage will take place causing a fire hazard. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Release the fuel system pressure.
3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
4. Disconnect the fuel filter inlet fuel tube quick connect coupling and fuel filter outlet fuel tube spring lock coupling.
5. Remove the fuel filter from the fuel filter bracket.
6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- If a tie strap was removed, reinstall a new tie strap in the same location.

There are release tools required to remove the lines. a plastic set of them is about 10 bucks from a parts store. This video will give you instructions on how to use them

Fuel Line Disconnect Tool
SPECIAL TOOL(S)
REMOVAL
1.Use the Fuel Line Disconnect Tool to disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter.
INSTALLATION
1.Install the fuel filter. NOTE: When installing fuel lines to the fuel filter, push the lines onto the ports until a definite "click" is heard, then pull on the fittings to ensure they are engaged.
2.Connect the fuel lines.
SPECIAL TOOL(S)
REMOVAL
1.Use the Fuel Line Disconnect Tool to disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter.
INSTALLATION

Here is a picture of the tool you will need. I bought this one at O'Reillys for $3.99. Don't count on them to let you know you need one before you break the clip inside one of the hoses. FORD won't sell you just a clip either or even an individual hose. I had to buy BOTH new hoses from FORD for $112.00. Last NEW FORD I'll ever own. Good luck.

I am finally done with installing my rebuilt 5.4 liter motor into my 1997 F150. I decided it was a good time to install a fuel filter. The first quick connect (the one towards the back) came on with minimal effort. The front side took me hours. When it finally came out a black metal or hard plastic ring came out with it. Is this bad? I managed to pry the ring off of the old filter. I tried just slipping it on to the new filter. But it will not fit inside. Any advice? Thanks.

No, it is not a retaining clip. It came from inside the quick connect fitting and was stuck on the nipple of the fuel filter.

No, I was hoping for someone to know exactly what to do in this situation. I hope that I do not have to replace the fuel lines. It is possible to just replace the quick connect piece?

Just had the same thing happen to me. Fuel filter had not been changed in a long time, part of the connector seized/rusted onto the filter and stayed behind when the connector removed. Leaked badly when reattatched. Wound up getting towed to the local garage, they said they can repair the fitting without changing the fuel line. I guess changing the filter more frequently would prevent this. I found changing the filter to be a pain, especially getting the filter out of the bracket once disconnected.

So I went to change the fuel filter on this truck and it looks as though the last guy to change it used the wrong filter as there is no gap between the filter and the line to get the line removal tool in there. There is room for a Flathead screwdriver or a hacksaw blade. Should I just cut it out and use the tool to pull the male end of the filter out of the fuel line.
