Ford Windstar

I have a 1998 Ford Windstar, 3.8L with approx. 116K miles. For the
last couple months, I smell a warm, maple syrup odor when I come to a stop and
when I exit the van. No puddles underneath the engine or the exhaust pipe. A
month ago, I put in a bottle of the Prestone leak-stop stuff and things were
fine for about 2 weeks. Now it's losing about an inch or so of coolant from the
reservoir every two days but the radiator itself is full. The thermostat shows
the driving temp never goes more than half the distance of the gauge - smack
between hot and cold. I'm being told intake manifold or head gaskets are the
likely culprits; what's your thoughts on it and do you have any idea on repair
costs? Many thanks!

I would do a pressure test on the system! The other possibilty are the engine's freeze plugs can weep, but not enough to leave a puddle. Till they corrode some more.
