Overheating, Possibly a seal, Has full Power, some smoke

I have a 2000 Ford Taurus Wagon 6Cyl. Stalled on the interstate I thought I was out of gas. Refilled, hard to start, noticed light smoke, had full power and rpm but overheated very quickly. I noted antifreeze was very low to empty and I believe the fan may not be working correctly. I check my fluids on a regular basis so the antifreeze disappeared. Possibly causing the smoke? Oil was full and other than needing to be changed it looks fine.
After cooling off the car remains hard to start as if out of gas. It does not idle, instead it stalls as soon as I take my foot off the gas. Any ideas? And what might be a reasonable repair estimate. Anything that you could eliminate as a cause would also be helpful. Like blown headgasket etc.
Thanks so much,
;-)
