I was wondering if there is a way to wittle down to see if maybe it is not my catalytic converter starting to plug up? It all started with my engine light comin on, the code called for a po300 ramdom misfire and also a po316 misfire and then the last code was a po430 catalyst system below efficency bank 2.
after I did a tune-up on the motor (plugs and wires )
I went ahead and cleared the codes, after about 4-5 days it came on again, this time with just a code of the po430 catalyst system below efficency bank 2.
Is there a good chance that it might be a vacuum leak, o2 sensor, or is it just the catalytic converter getting worst? I would hate to replace a converter if that might not be the problem. I need help wondering where else to start, to narrow it down.
I also drive round trip to work and back 104 miles a day 5 days a week, is this going to hurt me worse?
it does not over heat w/ temp gage and gas milage has not really changed or dropped. When at a stop idle I can watch rpm gage run at 700 to 850 rpm and jump up and down about a 1/4 of a 100 on gage and sometimes feel a slight miss, worse when a/c is on.

You will need a oscilloscope or a scan tool and watch the rear o2 sensor for that bank. compare it with bank one.

since you were having a misfire raw fuel was getting into the cat and that can cause them to overheat and burn up this will need replacement.

Catalytic Converter

Removal and Installation
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. Remove and discard the 2 nuts and the muffler clamp.
To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
3. Remove the 2 catalytic converter-to-dual Y-pipe nuts and the catalytic converter.
Discard the nuts and the gasket.
To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).

4. NOTE: Clean the mating surfaces of the catalytic converter and the dual converter Y-pipe.

NOTE: To correctly seat the converters, alternately tighten the catalytic converter-to-dual converter Y-pipe nuts to specification.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Install new nuts, gasket and muffler clamp.

2005 Ford Taurus Engine Size unknown Front Wheel Drive Automatic 82000 miles

I bought my 2005 Ford Taurus and I travel alot due to my youngest childs medical needs so last week I went into the city. I notice the car was jerking and I tried to push on the gas pedal the car then shut off. I turned it back on then it went again I took it to a car repair they told me it could be the catalytic converter. My car is now parked so I am wondering could this be the problem and how do I declog the converter the mechanic told me that I have 5 lines in the converter and 2 were clogged. I need my vehicle I only used it for about a year and half.

Sounds like it could be a converter to me, if you have a vaccum guage we can perform a test to see if its exhaust sytem related.

You wouldnt clean it yourself you would be best off replacing it as the plugging probaly heated it up and weakened it and it will eventually go out again.

My MIL light is on. My OBD-II returns a PO-430 code, "Catalyst system below threshold Bank 2". I presume that means catalytic convertor replacement time. My service manual shows one dual y-shaped cat, which can be obtained from Eastern and several others for a relatively modest $300 or so. Repair shops are telling me there are additional convertors and to expect $900+ for parts, labor additional. The replacement looks like a bear of a job without a lift. Are there additional cats beyond the y-shaped one? If so, how do I differentiate which one(s) should be replaced? Is the dual y-shaped cat a bolt-in job or must it be cut out and welded in place?

Sorry! "My bad!" It's a 49 state 3.0L V-6 OHV, I believe that's a "U" engine code, but it appears both V-6s that year use the same Y-shaped cat. Can you tell me if there is an additional cat behind that? If there were an O-2 sensor problem additionally, wouldn't that show up as additional codes? Some of my monitors still do not show as "incomplete" after driving the vehicle for two or three days after clearing a code.

All depend on what you have for engine and emission
California emission is a different then the federal
before doing any ordering make sure you have the correct information (if it California or federal)
the price is about $ 300 dollars is for federal catalytic converter
some come with front and rear converter and have it checked
it is a B and  to do and that using a lift
I would imagine for it to be very difficult to do laying down under the vehicle
one more think was the O2 sensors checked
do you have any exhaust leak
all this would effect the catalytic converter

Sorry! I did not give you complete vehicle info. It is a 2005 Taurus 3.0L V-6, OHV, 49 state, I believe engine code "U", though, it sems both V-6 engine codes that year used the same dual Y-shaped cat.
Is there anadditional catalytic convertor behind the dual Y-shaped cat? Does the Y-Cat need to be welded in? I do not have an exhaust leak, nor are there any other codes displayed. When I clear the codes, the IM monitors for catalyst system and evaporative system are still shown as "incomplete" several days and numerous cold starts later. If I replace the cat, should the O-2 sensors also be replaced? I believe there are four of them, and several were replaced when the vehicle was still under warranty.

The Y catalytic converter assembly all you need as far as other converter even if you have it its not monitored and no need to replace it
(which I dont believe you have one )

I " œve always installed a new O2 sensors
with a job like this
yes you have four before and after the cat

if its monitors not getting ready
check if engine reaching operating temp
and also check thermostat and coolant sensor
check and monitor O2 sensors
if one was changed on a bank and not the other in some cases you would get similar codes

should not need to weld any pipes
it bolts to the manifolds and to the rear pipe

We know the codes on machine show catalytic converter isn't pushing enough pressure and are probably clogged how can you clean them out?

You cannot clean a catalytic converter, this is a fallacy, They must be replaced don't believe the people who say that you can.

Replace the catalytic converter still cheaper than a new car

I was driving my car from Youngstown Ohio to Cleveland Ohio on cruise, when all of a sudden my car began to lose power. Top speed was 45 mpr and idling very rough. I had my car checked because the service the engine light was on. I was told my catalytic converter was going bad. I had three coils in the back replaced and was told the other three needed replaced. HELP PLEASE!

What are the exact code numbers you have not code descriptions? I haven't seen that many coils go bad at once?Sounds like you have a plugged cat have a exhaust back pressure test done.

Oh yeah you have to have good air flow going in and good air going out of the engine.A plugged cat can greatly effect how the engine performs. See if you have a nice blue spark from the coils that they say need to be replaced? If they do they don't need to be replaced.

After doing a complete turn up on the car, the car had an idling problem. Codes kept saying bank 1 and 2. Corrected the issue but the car kept cutting off. Finally, I took the car into the dealership. They said the catalytic converter is bad in the center. Is there a cheaper way to replace the catalytic converter other than the dealer replacement?

It will be based on if you purchase a direct fit part or a universal one. A direct fit will require you to unbolt the old one. A universal requires that you cut the old one off the OEM pipe and clamp the new one in place.
