Engine Performance problem
1998 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive 128000 miles

My service engine light came on, giving me a Po300 code. I had new spark plugs and wires installed and still getting the code. What can I have done to figure out from the list of things that might be causing it what is actually causing it. There is a slight knock when the car idles, but it starts without issue, seems to be getting pretty decent gas milage (about 17 mpg in the city) and runs just fine when at higher speeds. Just can't figure out what is causing code and slight misfire at idle speed.

Random misfire P0300 normally caused by vacuum leaks and bad fuel.

Engine misfiring can be caused by worn or fouled spark plugs, a weak spark (weak coil, bad spark plug wire), loss of compression, vacuum leaks, anything that causes an unusually lean fuel mixture (lean misfire), an EGR valve that is stuck open, dirty fuel injectors, low fuel pressure, or even bad fuel.
