Engine Cooling problem
1996 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 125000 miles

I recently bought a real nice car that has an overheating problem. First off, let me say that I suspect the heater core is shot. There is no heat. But, what is odd about this car is that I can run it sometimes all day long and it runs fine. Then at other times I run it a few miles and the temp goes up. When this happens, it leaks water from somewhere (have not determined where, but suspect it comes from the over flow resevoir) onto the ground. I plan to replace the heater core soon. What else can I do?

Pressure check coolant system for leak would be my 1st step
check heater core lines by fire wall for corrosion and leak
check thermostat
