Fuel pump removal problems

1988 ford ranger 2.3L 170,000miles reg. Cab. I am having a problem romoving the fuel pump from the gastank are there any tricks to twist it off.

I use a brass punch and a hammer and tap the lockring off. Should just unscrew.
