Engine Mechanical problem
1997 Ford Probe 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 118000 miles
I just bought a 1997 probe gt that when I bought it it started up fine and seemed to drive fine and had a check engine light on assuming that it was something simple to fix. Well shortly after trying to drive it more than a couple of miles that car sputered out and died will I was driving. After letting it sit, on the side of the road, I tried to start it again and it started up with the throttle wide open. It will idle all day, but as soon as you drive it it get about a mile down the road and it sputered out again. It feels like it is flooding itself out. I dont know if you would call it a backfire, burt it seems to shake and rattles the entire exhaust system. I managed to get it to the part store to pull the codes to see what the check engine light was all about. It didn, t give a code number off the tool that they were using it just read out that it needed a idle spped control and some sort of transmission code that I do not know what it was. The parts guy told me if I replaced the ISC that it would clear the other code. So I replaced the ISC, throttle body, and throttle position sensor. After replacing all that it stared up perfectlly and the check engine light went out, and when I took it for a test drive around the block it was fine. Once I tried to drive it down the highway it made it about 5 miles and basically died out. After waiting a couple of minutes it would start up with the throttle wide open and drive in first and second at a steady rpm, if I tried to get it over 3500 it would just sputer out and if I put it in third it would just choke out. Nothing feels wrong in the drive line what so ever. It shifts perfect and clutch feels like it was replaced recently so I have no idea what the transmission code was all about ethir. One other interesting thing is that who ever owned it before me removed the crusie control from under the hood and replaced the steering wheel without crusie on the wheel. I am assuming the check engine light that came back on is going to say the same thing as it did before I replaced the throttle body, ISC, and TPS because it is doing exactlly what it was doing before I replaced the parts. I am trying to figure this out on my own before I go to the dealer and pay them a $100 and hope what they tell me works, because I have been reading just abut every forum I can find and alot of people that have gone to the dealer have not had alot of succes. Whatever help you could offer me would be greatlly apprciated. Thanks, Brian
