Timing belt went out ont he Ford Probe- This is the same platform as the Mazda 626. The manual indicates to line up the cam to the marks on the heads and then align the crankshaft mark (no mark but the keyway is TDC) to the mark on the oil pump and the gear. It indicates that before putting the belt on to move the crank 1 tooth counterclockwise and install the belt. The engine started but is blowing some white smoke and is makign a very soft knock. Idles smooth and seems to run OK I think that the crank should have been aligned at TDC with the camshafts aligned to the marks ont he head? Any thoughts?
