Transmission problem
1999 Ford F150 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

while drivng last week vehicle heated up and and I lost all foward gears, I could still drive in reverse. I had to have the vehicle towed. A day or 2 after I started it up and it seamed to be fine, but I don't trust it. What could it be.

Hi:
Overheat can be caused by many things, a bad thermostat, clogged radiator, engine timing, headgasket. Have you been consuming coolant? If not, I would start with the cheapest thing, the thermostat.

Let me know if it helps. As far as the trans, it most likely went into something like a limp mode to protect the trans. It should be fine; however, try to avoid overheat it again.
