After running for aprox 5 minutes, a large leak of antifreeze develops spraying lots of it all over the engine. Is it a hose, or more likely the thermostat-do I need a tow 10 kms away to get it to a shop, or will it make it? If it is a hose likely, where do I look for a crack?

If it is spraying most likely it is a hose. To find the hose that is leaking fill the radiator with water watch for leak if it is as bad as you say you shouldn't have to star the engine. If leak is not visible then start the engine and look for leak should be very noticable without getting to operating temp.
