Engine Performance problem
2006 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 41000 miles

My 2006 Ford Explorer began missing today after being driven about 5 miles. It seems to " miss" when the gas is held at a steady spot or speed and also when at a stop light in drive and in park. I have been told this could be numerous things, one being the fuel filter. Since this is a maintenance item that needs to be done anyway we were going to do this first. But we can't find the filter. My husband has traced the fuel lines back from the engine to the tank and no filter. Is it in the tank? Most people we have talked to have said no, but we can't find it. Please let us know. Thank you!
