When traveling at hwy speeds and gently pushing further on the accelerator, the vehicle feels like there is a sputter or the trani is engaging and disengaging rapidly. Although, watching the Tach, it doesn't appear the engine is increasing separate of the trani. When pressing faster and further on the accelerator, the problem does not show up. Tried turning off the Overdrive and the problem still occurred. Cannot tell if it is an engine or trani problem. No "check engine" light set.

It sounds like an engine miss. If you only allow it to happen for a short period of time, the computer will not set a code. It sounds like tis time for a tune up these guides can help us fix the problem

and

Please run down these guides and report back.

If I had to guess, I would think you have a weak coil. The transmissions in these vehicles are great and have very little trouble.

That bad part here is the fact that the check engine light hasn't come on. The most common problem with the 5.4L is the coil. The fuel injectors, trans, engine. Are bullet proof. You would be surprised how many coils I've replaced. The only thing is, without a code, I have no way to be sure which one is the problem or if a coil is causing it. You may have to wait until it gets worse and sets the light.

Plus, the fact that it does it in both OD and with the OD off tells me it isn't the trans.

So, based on your user name, I take it you like to hunt. Have you gotten anything this archery season?

Change all plugs and the other coils. Look for coolant in the wells for the plugs, if there is, you will need to replace the intake

I assume the check engine light must be on. Have the codes read and post them here. Be sure to post the engine size and mileage when you come back.

When it rains, or I wash off the engine the truck runs ROUGH! Last time it did this I had washed off the engline and it ran rougher than ever. It would actually die for a split second and then restart, the lights would dim coming up to a idle, the security light on the dash would keep coming on even with engine running, check engine light was on. I brought it to Auto Zone hoping I could get a clue as to whats shorting out, but when they connected the scanner, the port was dead.
After a night of sitting it started driving right again.
Well now, the weather has been dry, I have not washed the engine off since, but its all of a sudden running rough, missing like crazy during any acceleration. I thought maybe it was bad gas. I put some octane boost, and fuel system cleaner, but to no avail. I bought a fuel filter, but cannot find where it goes. I checked along the whole under side along the frame, see nothing. I JUST replace plugs and boots about 18,000 miles ago. Was running GREAT after that. Dont know if these two issues are the same, or if I have two different issues causing the missing.

It's far more likely to be an engine misfire although I am not there to hear and feel it. These engines have a lot of problems with the coils causing misfires but it usually sets a code to identify the cylinder.

If you replaced the plugs and it still does it, chances are you have a bad coil pack. Also, the check engine light should be on if there is a misfire. Have the computer scanned to determine which cylender is missing. Then I would check that coil pack.

Let me know what you find.

One sign of trouble ahead was it would have a bad cold start missing and puttin, then once it warmed up it was fine. Now it has a good cold start and when it warms up it starts missing, like that of a vehicle running out of gas. So far two mechanics have not figured out what is wrong with my ford expedition. Had a new manifold put in, because of losing antifreeze and yes it got in the oil, new brain and it still misses while driving. Also had spark plugs replaced and gas filter changed. Both mechanics were highly recommended, so this is going to be a challenge, its been in the second mechanics garage now for going on four months.
