While driving tonight the arm that turns the wheel broke off at the wheel end. I was able to rest it back on and drive home very slowly. Is this a major job, or one that can be done relatively inexpensively.

Tie rod I assume? Relatively inexpensive. Should have the front end checked over. I would find a new shop before the old one helps kill you.
