Engine Performance problem
1998 Ford Escort 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 320000 miles
I have a 1998 Escort which has a lot of miles on it, but has been taken good care of. Lately I've had a problem that I can't figure out. After driving for a 1/2 hour or so, when I push the clutch in the idle will jump up to 3000 rpms. I can shut it off and restart it and it will be ok for a few miles and then do it again. This started about 6 months ago and I cleaned the intake and IAC and the problem went away for a few weeks. I cleaned it several times and each time it would be ok for a while and come back. A few weeks ago, it did it and it wouldn't go back to normal so I replaced the IAC. This fixed it for a day or 2 and then it came back! I've also replaced the TPS, MAP, plugs, wires, ran injector cleaner through it, changed the pcv valve, cleaned the EGR system, changed the air filter, checked all of the vacuum hoses, checked for vacuum leaks and checked all of the wiring. Right now, I've got a wire from the IAC ran into the inside with a voltmeter hooked to it to monitor the voltages when it happens. When it's idling normally I get around 4 volts. It hasn't done it with the voltmeter hooked up yet so I don't that voltage yet. Does anyone have any idea what else could be causing this? I'm at my wits end! Thanks for the help.
