I have a 1998 Ford Contour 4 cylinder. I thought that I needed oil in my car because it was making a ticking noise so I put 2 1/2 quarts of oil in my car and about 30 seconds down the road it started smoking white smoke and then cut off but it started right back up? Did I put too much oil or is it something else?

2 1/2 quarts is a lot of oil to be just adding. Did you check the level of the oil on the dipstick? If it was that low then i'm surprised the engine hasn't locked up on you already. White smoke is signs of coolant burning, not oil. May want to check out that oil level and the oil itself. If its milky looking there may be coolant mixed into it which is a sign of a serious problem (i.E. Cracked head gasket.)
