My car first died while sitting at a stoplight then wouldn't start back up, so I had it towed home, then we go out to look at it and it starts so I drove it then it did it again this time it died while I was driving down the highway. It wouldn't start back up right away but after letting it sit for about 20 minutes it started back up and I made it home.

You need an adapter which you probably don't have. An auto parts store may have it pic enclosed.

I have manual diesel sorento that for the last 6 years has performed flawlessly. However, last week the following happened 3 times in 1 trip.

I was towing my exhibition trailer (approx 2.3tonnes) and when I tried accelerate from a roundabout, junction or go up a steepish hill the engine would "feel" like it misfired, and would then die when I depressed the clutch. Turning off and restarting and all would be fine. After the second failure I noticed that the engine check light came on. After the third failure I completed the journey by ensuring that I did not put the engine under any undue strain (under 2000 rpm),

Once I reached the destination, I unhitched the trailer and use the car normally. I also noticed the following day that when I started the engine check light was out, and stayed out.

After completing the event, I towed back and deliberately avoided any strain, and had no failures and the engine check light did not illuminate.

Get a scan to retrieve the troubel codes to see what it says.
The fuel filter might require replacement.

The closed have been downloaded and are u0006 and u0010, both of which according to google suggest a cam sub issue.

I've managed to recreate the issue in normal drivi g bu heavily accelerating / revving the engine, and the check light seems to Rees after 12 hrs.

Hopefully I wont need to pay dealer rats to get to the bottom of this.

The car does do some offloading as I photograph wildlife and equine sports so go across fields and muddy tracks

This could be due to the oil quality and level. If oil change is due, replace it and ensure oil level is correct.

This sounds like a classic crankshaft angle sensor which usually will not trigger a check engine light. Here is a guide to show you what you are in for when doing the job with diagrams below to show you how to fix your car:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/crankshaft-angle-sensor-replacement

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.

Cheers

Engine Mechanical problem
2004 Kia Sorento 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Engine just died. No warning, no surging, no sputtering. Someone said it sounded like a fuel pump. But the pump turns when cranking, but does not pressure up when key is on. Again someone else said a bad relay. I switched out the relay but no change. I will not start at all. But the pump runs while cranking. Disconnected gas return line and then cranked again. I seem to have gas pumping through line, although I am not sure what is normal pressure. But the pump is still turning when cranking.

Are you getting spark to the engine? Also, here is a how to for checking fuel pump pressure:

https://www.2carpros.com/how_to/how_to_check_fuel_pressure.htm

Check that and let me know what you find. Finally, is the check engine light on?

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.
