I have an 85 AMC Eagle Limited. The car when I start it cold will run fine after warming up for about 15 min or so. Sometimes when I'm driving it will stall and not start again for about 30 min and when it does start I have to hold the gas down until I finally get a good idle which can take a little while as well. However awhile ago I noticed a thick black smoke comming from the exhaust. At first I thought that it may be oil but as a I got closer I noticed a fuel smell. I took a cup collect the drip and it burns. I have also noticed that my fuel economy is low like maybe 6 miles per gallon. I have recently passed an IM test w/ hel from the tech though .... all vaccume lines are good/just recently replaced. Please help as I dont even know where to begin.

If there is black smoke, that means the air / fuel mixture is too rich. What I recommend is checking to make sure the choke is opening fully once the car warms up. Let me know what you find.
