Backup light not working

The backup lights do not work when placed in reverse. I have replaced the switch and I know it works. The switch was tested prior to being put in transmission. Could it be the actuator rod and what is it actually called or is it a ground problem. The reason I ask about the ground is because I has the switch grounded to the frame when I tested it. If it is the actuator, can I replace it myself?

I would suspect the grounding first, but you haven't provided info on the age of the vehicle. After a few years of service the dang grounds get to be an issue.

The vehicle in question is a 92 DODGE DAKOTA CLUB CAB 4X4 with 220,000 miles. The transmission has been replaced and worked on several times. IF it is a ground problem, where is the grounds located for the transmission?
