Engine Whining and howling noise when accelerating

Hello,

The 48RE transmission on my truck, it shifts great after I replaced the TCC/overdrive solenoid, extreme duty upgrade governor solenoid, governor pressure transducer (sensor), output speed sensor with O-ring, 3-4 accumulator spring, and a new filter. But I still have another problem. I hear a whining/howling sound when I push on the gas that is very noticeable at low speeds when it is accelerating. It does not make this noise when in reverse, or park or neutral when it is sitting there with the engine running. Could that be caused by another part I have to replace? Thanks.

Try driving in a large circle like a parking lot one way then the other see if it is noisier on one way then the other if it is then it is a wheel bearing more than likely or axle shaft if it noisy straight away it could be rear axle noise so check your fluid level in axle.

Hello,

The transmission makes this noise when the fluid pump is cavitating. This could be caused by air getting into the pump becasue of the bad pump O ring which means it needs to come apart. Is the noise coming form the transmission can you tell?

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I took the truck out and it’s not the wheel bearing. I checked the fluid in the axle, and it was fine.

When I took the truck out again, I saw some things today that I was wrong about� that being that the faint noise is there all the time whenever I’m accelerating, even when it’s in reverse, and even when I rev it with the parking brake on, both in neutral or park. Unless it’s a high rev, you can’t hear the noise, so that’s why I didn’t notice it at these times before.

I’m thinking it might be a fluid problem because it’s very hard to read the dipstick, and I do know that you have to read it when the engine is hot. Does anyone know how much fluid should be in my 48RE transmission on my 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4?

Also, I can’t find anywhere online what is a normal temperature for the transmission, both for normal driving and when I’m towing. Can you help me out on that too?

As far as temps you don't want trans fluid over 230 which it may do towing. Fill fluid level when warm to marked on stick unless you are changing oil it never gets it all anyhow.15quarts auto trans fluid +4 is designation. Make sure it's the correct stuff.

My pickup sat 4 days after being driven in a snow storm. When pulling out of the garage the rear wheels made loud groaning/howling noise. It stopped after 1/4 mile. Any cause for concern?
