1998 DODGE RAM 1500 CUTTING OFF

I am interested in buying a '98 Ram 1500 4x2 from a private seller. It only has 40,000 miles. The guy that owned it was older and only drove it around his local area. While test driving around the neighborhood, the engine would randomly cut off while I was on the accelerator. It idled fine, no noises, and it did not run rough at all. Aside from the engine cutting off, it is in tip-top shape. I've heard a wide range of opinions between fuel system issues, to a sensor that gets clogged with carbon, to a faulty ignition system. The Check Engine light does not come on, so I don't think that hooking it up to the computer will really tell me much. Any ideas?
