I have a 1992 Pontiac Grand Am, automatic, Quad 4 with excessive milage. One of the problems I am experiencing is strong exhaust odor. I thought it was a hole in the firewall, but noticed I only smell it when windows are down. I thought replacing the oxygen sensor would help since I have given it a full tune-up and changed all filters and fluids recently. However, I cannot afford to have it put on a machine right now and wonder if I have guessed the right method. Recently the power locks stopped working and the ABS and brake lights stay on although new brakes installed and no problems with braking. I checked fuses, no problems there, and thought there might be a short in the wiring. Please tell me if you think I should treat this more severely. My major problem is something I have never heard of. One day driving down the road my steering column came loose, I can still steer, but the column moves around a bit if I do not hold it in a certain position. I can make it do a 360 circle, but it steers fine. The key sometimes won't turn. I have spent 15-20 minutes trying to get it to turn. Once it does turn it starts fine. I am a college student on a very fixed income and I have a mechanic but he cannot figure these things out. I have a feeling he may just not want to, but that is another story. Could you please help me out?
ps, I have a chilton and a haynes for it already.
have the same problem?
